Carrying On Family Tradition

Grandma 1

Photo is my Grandmother Stephanie from 1918, in her Traditional Slovak Dress.

As I unpack from the weekend trip, meeting my sister Pat, to pick up a box of photo memories to share with my children, I found myself contemplating “Family Tradition”. My sister surprised me with another package I was not expecting. It was a bag, containing the Traditional Slovak Folk costume my grandmother had made for my mother when she was about 12 years old. I had forgotten about it. It drew me back into the heritage of my family and with good reason, that same heritage I could now share in a very special way with my children.

Grandma 3

I found myself pondering Family Traditions.

Family traditionis defined as an aggregate of attitudes, ideas and ideals, and environment, which a person inherits from his/her parents and ancestors. Which one can definitely see, our Lord being the main portion. When we look at “Family Tradition”, that which has been handed down, its easy to see the importance of “Sacred Tradition” in our Faith Family.  We can easily assess the Truth of our Lord being Abba Father, as our Lord Jesus Christ gave us, through our spiritual Ancestors, the Apostles, His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist, and Word of God, also sending the Advocate, to continue His teachings in Love. We can look at the beautiful paintings, read His Word, participate in His Holy Sacrifice and yet there is still a longing for more, because when you truly love Him, you want to know everything you can about Him. Every detail, every aspect, every breath He takes, every step and every moment, you want to spend with Him. Details about Him, become important, the deeper the love is in Him. Prayer life blossoms and you hear Him.

Just as my Grandparents and Great Relatives would speak with love, sharing memories of their family members, my family members, and this love rings in our hearts with a smile of remembering that we, also, shall one day, be a memory. So to does our Catholic faith, carry on this same Love of our Lord, teaching us about Him, and He does come to us, ringing deeply in not only our hearts, but our entire soul bringing us conscious, waking up a place deep in Love for the good of others for Him. What we hear, should spark a deep delight for pleasing only our Lord. Which within the soul produces a desire and longing to learn more and more about Him.

Getting back to the folk costume. You can look at the pictures above and assume, but the assumptions we have, tend to miss out on very detailed information if we don’t look closer, just as we miss detailed information when we assume things about our Faith. When we go back to look closer, we see many things we missed before.

This is the shoulder of a sleeve of the blouse, from the traditional costume my grandmother had made.  Do you see the detail? Can you see every stitch that went into this work? Can you see the beauty of what once was a simply story and a black and white photo? This is how it is, when you delve deeper into our faith.

And the detail put into the building of the apron. There is so much. And every detail of this has a special meaning to it. Such is our Faith! In every detail is a meaning interwoven into the entire Church. If one were to say they know everything there is to know about our Catholic Faith, that one would be seriously mistaken. Just as if one were to say they know everything to know about each family member, they would be mistaken.

The vest. How the details are made known the more we look. Many different parts, coming together. Just as we are all many parts to the Body of Christ.

I was able to try it on both of my younger daughters, and it fit my youngest daughter. Granted, it needs to be cleaned, pressed, and cared for a bit, for it to be worn as it should be. Just like we do, when we put on the full armor of our faith.

Please read “Faith Of Our Fathers”, a post of mine from a few years ago.

“Maria Divine Mercy” – Fraud

There is only one Book of Truth and it is called the Holy Bible – In other words, the so called “Maria Divine Mercy” is a fraud.
The post below is form Fr. Carlos Martins, Roman Catholic Priest from Toronto, Ontario (April 28, 2013 via Facebook)

There is an abundance of people spreading these messages on the internet. More and more people are sending me emails containing them and asking me to promote, “Maria Divine Mercy”.

Stay away from this absurd and false prophet. “Maria Divine Mercy” is not receiving authentic messages. Many ignorant and gullible people are jumping on her bandwagon, or at least entertaining her absurd messages, to their own harm. (Her Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/JesusToMankind has over 18,000 followers. Her website is http://www.thewarningsecondcoming.com).

It is clear that the nature of her messages are to place a wedge between the faithful and the Church, specifically between the faithful and the Holy Father, Pope Francis. One of the “revelations” received by this very misguided person is that Pope Benedict will be the last Pope on earth, that he will be ousted from office, and that Pope Francis is a false pope. All three claims are false and individuals who believe them show they do not believe Our Lord’s words in Matthew 16:18-19. In questioning Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ on earth, they are questioning Jesus Christ himself. It is for such people that Hebrews 13:9 was written: “Do not be led astray by various kinds of strange teachings.” Furthermore, name for me ONE Saint in the Church’s long history that placed a private vision or revelation above the word of the Pope and of the Church? You won’t find any.

“Maria Divine Mercy” states that she has received messages from “the Holy Trinity as well as by the Virgin Mary.” Name for me ONE visionary from the Church’s list of approved apparitions that described himself/herself as a “visionary”, “prophet”, or “seer”? None exist. The seers at Fatima, St. Bernadette, St. Catherine Laboure, etc., all submitted their visions, received messages, and interpretations of both, to the Church. This is not only a recipe for spiritual health, it is also the mark of holiness. “Maria Divine Mercy” lacks both.

Finally, “Maria Divine Mercy” writes anonymously. No one knows who she is. This, in fact, should be the first thing to set off alarm bells. Name for me ONE prophet that hid himself/herself in secret while slinging out “revelations” without accountability and without subjecting himself/herself to the authority of the Church? There are none.

In giving credence to “Maria Divine Mercy”, devotees are disobeying the laws of the Church, are promoting an evil which is sowing discord among the faithful, and are leading people away from the Church, the same Church for which Christ shed his blood.

Those who subscribe to or spread these messages need to repent, for one day they will come under the judgment of God for doing so.

The National Catholic Register has a wonderful analysis of the absurd claims put out by “Maria Divine Mercy” by the brilliant apologist Jimmy Akin: http://www.ncregister.com/blog/jimmy-akin/9-things-you-need-to-know-about-maria-divine-mercy.

But wait! There’s more! His Excellency Spis Bishop Mons. Stephen Sečka, from Slovakia has more to say about “Maria Divine Mercy”

Bishop Sečka to spread the alleged Greater warning of Jesus Christ
P: 3, 21 11th 2012 12:44, DOM

Spis Chapter 21 November (ZENIT) – Spis Bishop Mons. Stephen Sečka issued on the basis of reports of priests and believers phone calls from the Internet to disseminate data big warning of Jesus Christ. On this occasion, issued an opinion that we bring in full.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I learned that in some parishes is very spread messages about the so-called Great Day of God’s warnings, resulting from the alleged private revelations of an Irish visionaries. These messages are distributed via the internet. I have found that it is a heretical teachings, which is not in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church and is showing signs of sectarianism. This whole doctrine is indeed poprepletaná prayers for God’s mercy and calls for confession, as well as the Catholic Church teaches, but quotations from Scripture are commented and explained arbitrary and contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Similar tendencies were already in the early Church, therefore St.. Apostle Peter wrote: “Above all, you should know that no prophecy of Scripture does not allow private interpretation” (2 Peter 1: 20).

After seeing this website I also found that believers are encouraged to have already bought so. “Seal of the living God” to be sanctified by a priest. I note that no priest faithful to Christ and his Church must cooperate in this matter, it would be guilty of transgressions against the faith and his office. For anyone who will disseminate these messages are delusional enough to apply strictly the words of Scripture, written by St. Apostle Paul to the Galatians:

“I marvel that from him that called you into the grace of Christ are under way quickly to another gospel. Ono nor other, unless there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But if we have preached unto you we, or an angel from heaven any other gospel than we have preached unto you, let him be accursed! As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed! I can now lean people or God? Or trying to please men? If I yet pleased men, I would not be Christ’s servant. “(Gal 1, 6-9).

All believers, who perhaps out of ignorance began to believe the messages mentioned, and please urge them to leave these heretical teachings and not spread them.

On this matter, I was obliged, in order to highlight the purity of Catholic faith, obedience and unity with the Holy Father, and for the sake of salvation of your souls.

Biskup Sečka k šíreniu údajného Veľkého varovania Ježiša Krista
P:3, 21. 11. 2012 12:44, DOM

Drahí bratia a sestry!

Všetkých veriacich, ktorí možno z nevedomosti začali veriť uvedeným posolstvám, prosím a dôrazne žiadam, aby opustili tieto bludné náuky a nešírili ich.

“God created man a rational being, conferring on him the dignity of a person who can initiate and control his own actions. “God willed that man should be ‘left in the hand of his own counsel,’ so that he might of his own accord seek his Creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church

Where is your faith and how much freedom does it bring you? Is you faith in your nation? Do you leave it in the hands of faithless men voted into office or do you seek the freedom that can never be taken away from you?

When we look at God, being the Master of our freedom, we know for certain, it can never be taken away, for the simple fact, it was given to us, from Him in the beginning, so we can pull closer to Him and ask Him in which way we should go. When we set out seeking a different form of freedom, freedom in men to do as they see fit with our gifts, our moralistic rights will always be left out in the cold, or rather, compromised in the decisions that they make, because theirs can never match ours. Theirs are theirs and yours are yours. When God is the center of both, our morals become united by Him to do His will, and therefor become a fiber. A single thread in what is right and just, waiting to be knitted back in the fabric of a society lost in self-absorption and on the brink of narcissism.

When freedom is on the brink of being lost, it takes effort and work to bring it back. It is not something that can be left in the hands of others, simply because one thread that is good, has been sewn back in the moral fiber of a nation. More threads must be produced, in order that the fabric can be sewn back into what it should be. I beg my readers to not let sloth come into play again, in regards to the Religious Freedom we have in this nation. The battle against the Culture of Death, is not against just one man or woman, but an ideology of many. Unlike our faith, which is the belief in One God and obedience to Him. It takes much more then one election to change the tide against it. If we let it go now, there is no telling if we shall ever see it again.

My Great Uncle, who entered into eternal life in 1981, Msgr. Mikulas Misik, was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1930, in Slovakia. He survived the Nazis, then survived the Communist Occupation. Never giving into either of them. He never stopped celebrating daily Mass, even with the threat of death because of his faith and vocation being a Priest. He faced this on a daily basis. He was even thrown into prison for being Catholic and, if one is taking an oath of poverty in a Communist country, poverty is illegal and taking an oath of poverty goes against the “law”.. He never believed his nation would save him, even though he served in the Slovakian Army before becoming a Priest. When he passed into Eternal Life, December of 1981, he did so never seeing freedom again for his nation of Slovakia, but lived every day in the freedom that our Lord provided him and all his flock. He could have left, but chose to stay with the sheep. He could have caved and left the priesthood, so his life might have been easier in “Society”. I am greatful that idea never crossed his mind. I only met him 3 times. On one occasion, he presided over my First Holy Communion Mass.

(Photo above) The first time I met him, I was about 4 and I told him I wanted to go back with him to his country because I wanted to be a princess and live in a castle like all priests and nuns do! To this day, his faith influences me and has been a gateway for me to know what true faith in God is all about. Freedom. One day I hope that I will be in his nation, the nation I believe he may be in today, with my Lord in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Almighty and merciful God,
in your goodness take away from us all that is harmful,
so that, made ready both in mind and body,
we may freely accomplish your will
